Neo QLED sits a layer above standard QLED because the backlight is made of Quantum Mini LEDs rather than conventional ones. Supreme Mini LED Dimming controls them in fine groups, so a lamp on screen can stay bright while the shadow beside it holds its depth. The NQ4 AI Gen2 processor handles the picture, with 4K AI Upscaling cleaning up broadcast and streaming sources.
Refresh rates differ across the range, so check the size before you buy for gaming: the 55 inch and larger carry Motion Xcelerator 144 Hz and HDR10+ Gaming, while the 50 inch does not. Every size shares the same connections, though, with four HDMI inputs, eARC, Wi-Fi 6E and Tizen with seven years of OS upgrades.
The QN80H is the sensible middle of the Neo QLED range: bright enough for a south-facing room, and priced below the sets that chase peak specification.
About this size: The 50 inch is the exception in this range. Samsung lists it at 50 Hz with 4K 60 Hz over HDMI, and it has no DLG 240 Hz, no Wide Viewing Angle and no HDR10+ Gaming. How the Mini LED backlight works
A conventional LED television lights its panel with a modest number of large diodes. Quantum Mini LEDs are far smaller, so more of them fit behind the screen and the set can steer light in tighter zones. Supreme Mini LED Dimming is the control layer that decides which groups fire and how hard. The practical result is a picture that keeps highlights bright without washing grey into the dark parts of the frame, which matters most on high contrast films and sport under floodlights.
Gaming: read the size chart first
This is the one area where the range is not uniform. From 55 inches upwards you get Motion Xcelerator 144 Hz with VRR, DLG 240 Hz, HDR10+ Gaming and 4K 144 Hz on all four HDMI ports, plus Game Bar, HGiG and FreeSync Premium Pro. The 50 inch is a different specification: Samsung lists it at 50 Hz with 4K 60 Hz over HDMI, and no DLG or HDR10+ Gaming. Buy accordingly.
Sound, smart features and connections
Thirty watts of built-in audio carries Dolby Atmos, with Object Tracking Sound Lite placing effects roughly where they belong on screen and Active Voice Amplifier Pro lifting dialogue when the room gets noisy. Worth knowing
- The 50 inch is not the same gaming set as its siblings: Samsung lists it at 50 Hz, without DLG 240 Hz or HDR10+ Gaming.
- This is still an LCD panel with a backlight behind it, so black levels depend on dimming zones rather than pixels that switch themselves off.
- Thirty watts is fair for the money but modest for a large screen; budget for a Q-Symphony soundbar if you watch a lot of film.
